Coledale and Newlands NFM study
An opportunity to restore some of the natural functioning of the river and valley bottom of Coledale and Newlands Beck exists through the Natural Course LIFE Integrated Project. Natural England and partners requested AquaUoS staff to conduct an integrated hydromorphological audit and Natural Flood Management opportunity assessment to reduce the risk of future flooding to Braithwaite.
The project identified in excess of 200 NFM measures across the Coledale and Newlands catchments up as far as the village of Stair. These were modelled alongside several engineering led options linked to gravel management and lake level manipulation (suggested by stakeholders during extensive liaison) to ascertain their impact on flooding to Braithwaite and the valley floor above Bassenthwaite Lake. The results showed only minor reductions in extreme flood peaks with the effects increasing at lower magnitude flows. Wider dredging also showed minor local improvements to flooding but increased risk significantly downstream.
