Little Stour Restoration

Little Stour pic and key

AquaUoS undertook a hydromorphological assessment and design study for Southern Water in 2017-18 to develop river restoration measures and options for 4 weirs on the Little Stour at Littlebourne, Kent.

The Little Stour is a predominantly chalk river system that has been significantly impacted by historic straightening, dredging and abstraction.

This study was undertaken alleviate the low flow pressures on this baseflow dominated system created by abstraction in the catchment. Alongside weir removal and modification, options developed included narrowing of the river channel through introduction of appropriate morphology to elevate local flow velocities and reduce the tendency for fine sediment deposition across the characteristic gravel bed.
