Medlock Weir (River Irwell) and Crimble Weir (River Roch)

Medlock Weir pic and key

The Irwell Rivers Trust and Environment Agency have identified a weir on the River Medlock and a weir on the River Roch for removal/modification to facilitate fish passage and AquaUoS staff undertook a feasibility studies including a fluvial audit to establish system function and potential response to removal or modification to the weir structures.

Optioneering was then undertaken to establish the preferred approach for each weir and the likely impact of doing nothing at the sites, and concept drawings were then drawn for contractor liaison. Impacts to infrastructure were fully considered throughout and the studies were informed by 2D hydraulic modelling to determine the impacts on the flow and sediment regime as well as any flood risk change associated to the schemes.
